Cultural

"A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people"

- Mahatma Ghandi

"Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit"

- Jawaharlal Nehru

At St. Declan's we believe that Arts and Culture are an integral and equal inclusion, alongside our Academic and Sporting disciplines.

All our boys are encouraged to participate in the various classes and programmers on offer, as we strongly believe that a happy and fulfilled child is the one who has learned to create, perform and give freely.

It is often through the arts that hidden talent is revealed, and we strive to unlock this potential in all our boys by providing a safe outlet for creativity, self-expression, and intellectual stimulation.

At St. Declan's we offer a diverse list of extra-mural Arts and Culture programmes:

The Southern Arts Festival in April
All boys are encouraged to enter their art, creative writing, public speaking, poetry, and prepared speeches. High School boys are able to enter their photography too!

Alberton Eisteddfod
In the latter part of the year, the boys are welcome to partake in English and Afrikaans unprepared poetry, prescribed poetry, a junior primary choral verse, senior primary choral verse as well as a dramatic poem along with the art section.

Theatre Production
Every year, St. Declan's produces either a song and dance by each grade or a dramatic play, for the community.

Music Department
We encourage an environment full of singing and playing music. Our aim is for students to develop a sense of appreciation for music through learning to play an instrument as well as through singing. We also encourage participation in external practical music exams, like the ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall London, and Unisa.

Cubs and Scouts Group
Under the guidance of one of our educators, the Cubs, and Scouts group meets every Friday to partake in adventurous campouts, raft building, and charity work.

End of Year Carol Service
We close each year within our traditional Carol Service that includes a farmer’s market, picnic, and worship service where our in-house father Christmas generously dishes out candy!
