High School Subject Choices and Change Policy

PURPOSE

The policy is to ensure that learners make the correct choices regarding their subjects for the FET phase and to eliminate, as far as possible, any subject changes later in their high school career. All subjects in the Further Education and Training Phase follow a three-year programme from Grade 10 to 12.

SUBJECT CHOICE

All Grade 9 learners will make their subject selection for Grade 10 during the third term of the Grade 9 year. The subject choice will be approved by the Academic Head. The Life Orientation department will inform and liaise with learners regarding career options and the requirements (as per the LO curriculum).

Restrictions on certain subjects:
• Physical Sciences – 60% in Grade 9 Natural Sciences and Mathematics Grade 10, not Mathematical Literacy (as per IEB regulations).
• Mathematics – 50% in Grade 9 Mathematics.
• Information Technology – 50% in Grade 9 Mathematics.

SUBJECT CHANGES

Parents and learners must complete a subject change application form in order to change subjects. This is to be completed by the existing and possible future teacher.

Subject changes in Grade 10:
• A learner may change a maximum of two subjects.
• Subject changes must be done within the first 2 weeks of grade 10, at the end of Term 1 or the end of Term 2.

Subject changes in Grade 11:
• A learner may change a maximum of two subjects.
• Subject changes must be done within the first 2 weeks of grade 11 or at the end of Term 1.

Subject changes in Grade 12:
• NO subject changes will be allowed in the Grade 12 year.

ADMINISTRATION OF SUBJECT CHANGES

• Early identification of learners in Grade 10 and 11 for subject changes is especially important.
• The Academic Head/ HOD will consult with the parents, learner and subject teacher and consensus must be reached that it will be in the learner’s best interest to change.
• After an agreement has been reached, the Academic Head/ HOD, parents and subject teacher must complete and sign a subject change form indicating the subject change.
• This subject change must be captured on the school computer system (e.g. D6+) and a copy of the subject change form must be kept in the learner’s profile.
